Our History
The roots of Deal Carnival stretch all the way back to 1826. In the wake of the Naval Dockyard’s closure, the town of Deal found itself at a crossroads, with many dock workers and sailors feeling restless and the community’s spirits low. The local council saw a need to lift morale and attract visitors to the area. Thus, the Deal and Downs Regatta was born.
In its early years, the regatta was a series of waterborne events that brought colour and excitement to the sea. The press at the time praised the spectacle, describing it as a “very colourful display out on the sea.” The regatta quickly became a cherished tradition, bringing together residents and visitors for a joyful celebration.
Royalty soon became linked to this community event, beginning with the Duke of Clarence—the last Naval Commander of the former Dockyard—who would later become King William IV. Queen Victoria also lent her patronage to the celebrations, adding a regal connection that made the regatta even more special.
Sailing and rowing were at the heart of the festivities, originally held over a weekend in August, and later in September. The regatta was even known as the ‘Royal Regatta’ for many years, until the title was changed after the Second World War, becoming simply ‘Deal Regatta.’
Over the decades, Deal Carnival has grown and evolved, incorporating more community-focused elements while keeping the spirit of fun and festivity alive. Today, it stands as a vibrant showcase of Deal’s creativity, community, and rich history—a tradition cherished by all who take part.
