How it started

The history of Deal Carnival is a captivating story of community resilience and celebration that stretches back nearly two centuries. Born in 1826, Deal Carnival first emerged as a way to lift the spirits of the people of Deal following the closure of the Naval Dockyard. The Deal and Downs Regatta, as it was initially known, was filled with colourful waterborne events that attracted locals and visitors alike, bringing a much-needed boost to the town.

Over time, the carnival evolved, growing from its nautical roots into a larger celebration of the town itself. Floats, costumes, music, and festivities gradually took centre stage, and the regatta expanded beyond the water, bringing vibrant parades to the streets. What began as a modest attempt to rejuvenate the community has flourished into an annual highlight, uniting generations in the shared joy of tradition and festivity.

Today, Deal Carnival is a cherished event that showcases the talent, creativity, and spirit of the community. It represents a history of togetherness, an enduring passion for celebration, and the commitment of Deal’s residents to keeping this tradition alive. Each year, the streets of Deal fill with the energy of colourful floats, spirited performers, and enthusiastic crowds, echoing the same hopeful spirit that began in 1826. Through the dedication of the community and ongoing support from generous donors, Deal Carnival continues to thrive, keeping this piece of Deal’s history alive for everyone to enjoy.
